Tire Load Index & Towing Safety Calculator
Look up the maximum weight capacity in pounds (lbs) and kilograms (kg) for any tire load rating. Verify single tire, axle, and vehicle payload safety limits before towing trailers, campers, or heavy truck cargo.
When mounted as dual rear wheels (dually trucks), each tire is derated to 2,910 lbs (Index 118) due to road crown deflection.
🚐Towing & Payload Safety Check Simulator
Check if your proposed truck weight, trailer tongue weight, and bed cargo exceed your tire load capacity.
Total vehicle and tongue load is 7,050 lbs. Your 4 tires provide 12,788 lbs of carrying capacity, leaving a healthy 5,738 lb safety buffer (55% utilization).

❓ Frequently Asked Questions: Tire Load Index & Towing
Can I put tires with a lower load index than stock on my truck?
No, you should never install tires with a lower load index than the vehicle manufacturer specified on your driver's door jamb sticker. Commercial chain retailers (Costco, Discount Tire, America's Tire) will strictly refuse mounting due to liability. Lower load rated tires flex excessively under vehicle weight, run hotter, and are prone to sudden tread separation and highway blowouts.
What is the difference between Load Index 112, 114, and 121?
A load index of 112 supports 2,469 lbs per tire (common on midsize trucks like the Toyota Tacoma). An index of 114 supports 2,601 lbs (standard on half-ton trucks like the Ford F-150 and Silverado). An index of 121 supports 3,197 lbs per tire, which is the standard rating for 10-ply Load Range E heavy-duty off-road tires (like 285/70R17 and 35x12.50R17).
Why does a tire require maximum cold PSI to carry its maximum load?
Air carries the load, not the rubber. A Load Range E tire is only engineered to support its full 3,197 lb rating when inflated to its maximum operating pressure of 80 PSI. If you run that same tire at 40 PSI, its load-bearing capacity drops substantially. Always air up tires to manufacturer-recommended towing pressures before hitching heavy trailers.
Check Tire Pressure (PSI), Speedometer & Wheel Width
Calculate the exact cold PSI needed when switching between P-Metric and E-Load, verify speedometer error, or check wheel width safety.
